Shillong does not arrive like a city. It slowly appears through the mist.
High in the hills of Meghalaya, at around 1,496 metres above sea level, this small capital is often called the abode of clouds. But the name feels more like a lived truth than a label. Fact: Umiam Lake was created in the 1960s as part of a hydroelectric project.

Just before Shillong city, Umiam Lake opens wide across the hills. It is one of the largest artificial lakes in Northeast India, covering around 220 square kilometres (catchment area).
Morning mist floats above the surface. The water changes colour with the sky blue, green, sometimes even silver. Locals often come here in the evening when the wind slows and everything reflects softly on the surface.
It feels like the sky is resting inside the lake.
Elephant Falls – Three Steps of Falling Water
Fact: Elephant Falls is named after a rock formation that once looked like an elephant (destroyed in an earthquake).
This waterfall is one of Meghalaya’s most visited natural spots. It drops in three distinct layers, each with its own sound and energy.
The first fall is gentle. The second is louder. The third hits deep stone pools with full force.
Stone steps take you closer, and the air becomes cooler as mist rises. The sound is constant, almost like nature is repeating the same song without stopping.
Shillong Peak – Highest Point of the Region
Fact: Shillong Peak stands at about 1,966 metres and is the highest point in Meghalaya.
From here, the entire city looks small and green, wrapped in clouds. On clear days, even parts of Bangladesh can be seen far in the distance.
There is an Air Force radar station at the top, so visitors are allowed only up to a viewing area nearby. Clouds move fast here. One moment everything is visible, the next everything disappears into white fog.
It feels like watching the sky change its mind.
Ward’s Lake – A Lake Inside the City Heart
Fact: Ward’s Lake was built during the British colonial era and is over 100 years old.
A small, curved wooden bridge crosses the middle of the lake. The water is calm, shaped like a soft oval, surrounded by flower beds and walking paths.
Ducks glide slowly across the surface. Fish move just below the water, visible in clear patches.
Even though it is in the middle of Shillong city, it feels quiet. People come here to walk, sit, or simply pause for a while.
Laitlum Canyons – The Edge That Feels Endless
Fact: Laitlum literally means “end of hills” in the local Khasi language.
The canyons open suddenly into deep valleys that drop far below. From the top, villages look tiny, almost like dots connected by thin paths. Wind moves strongly here. Clouds pass through the valleys so close that you feel like you can step into them. There are no loud sounds, only air moving and distance stretching endlessly.
It feels like the land suddenly stopped and the sky continued.
Police Bazaar – Shillong’s Living Market
Fact: Police Bazaar is the busiest commercial area in Shillong and the main shopping hub for locals.
This area is always active. Shops sell warm clothes, street food, handmade crafts, and daily goods. The smell of noodles, fried snacks, and tea fills the narrow streets. Music comes from small stores, mixing with voices and movement. Even though it is busy, it does not feel overwhelming. It feels local, lived-in, and familiar.
This is where Shillong shows its everyday life.
Dawki River – Water You Can See Through
Fact: The Umngot River in Dawki is known as one of the clearest rivers in Asia.
Near the India–Bangladesh border, Dawki shows something rare water so clear that boats look like they are floating in air. On sunny days, the riverbed is fully visible. Stones, plants, and fish can be seen clearly through the surface. Wooden boats move slowly, leaving almost no disturbance behind.
It feels like nature removed all filters.
Cherrapunji (Sohra) – Rain That Never Ends
Fact: Sohra receives over 11,000 mm of rainfall annually, making it one of the wettest places on Earth.
In Cherrapunji, rain is part of everything. It shapes cliffs, forests, and even bridges.
The famous living root bridges are grown over decades using the roots of rubber trees. Some are believed to be over 100–150 years old.
Waterfalls appear from cliffs without warning. Clouds move so close that landscapes disappear in minutes.
It is not just a rainy place. It is a living water world.
Shillong Peak – A Memory Above the Clouds
Even after leaving, Shillong Peak stays in memory. Not as a place, but as a feeling wind on your face, clouds under your feet, and silence stretching beyond sight.
It shows how small everything becomes when nature takes over completely.
